Statement from Joseph Perkins, Chair of Martin University’s Board of Trustees:
We are aware of the conversations surrounding Governor Braun’s proposed state budget and want to address any concerns regarding its potential impact on our university. The withdrawal of state funding does not mean that the university lacks funding.
Martin University is a private institution that has historically not received state funding. Approximately two years ago, funding for Martin was added to the state budget. The additional budgetary funding provided by the state has been a helpful resource in supporting our mission.
Martin has appreciated the support from the state, but it is not the foundation of our operations. Our primary focus continues to be providing higher education for the student population we serve. We are committed to providing a transformative educational experience and fostering a collaborative, supportive environment for everyone in our community. Please know that we remain steadfast in our mission and will continue to serve with the same dedication and excellence.
Our thanks to all for their ongoing contributions to making our university a vibrant and resilient institution.
Founded in 1977, Martin University is Indiana's only Predominantly Black Institution (PBI) of higher education. It is steeped in a history of service, and its mission is to educate and develop diverse workforce-ready students in an inclusive, supportive, and collegiate environment. Martin University’s vision is to elevate the landscape while providing transformative opportunities, inclusive support, and service to our communities.
